Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Tomi Adeyemi and I'm a Young Adult Fantasy Writer represented by Alexandra Machinist and Hillary Jacobson of ICM Partners. My debut novel is CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE and it's being published in 2018.
I've been writing since I could read, but it wasn't until 2010 that I got serious about writing a novel. I threw myself into writing and started more books than I could name, but I couldn't finish one story. I wrote over 1,000 pages, but I didn't have one book to show for it.
In 2015 I decided whatever I was doing clearly wasn't working and if I wanted to write books I was going to have to learn how. So I did:
- I studied English Literature at Harvard University
- I talked to published authors
- I read as many books on writing as I could get my hands on
- I went to writer's conferences and soaked up everything
In short, I kicked my butt into gear and after a few months of hard work I had a finished novel. It wasn't easy, but it was done. And a lifelong dream had been fulfilled. That novel didn't get me a literary agent, but it taught me that I was close - 1 month later I cranked out the first draft of my second manuscript. 1 month after that, the manuscript got me into the 2016 Pitch Wars competition. After being mentored by an incredible editor, my revised manuscript got 32 full requests, 15 offers of representation, and landed me my dream agents. With their guidance, I'm currently revising my manuscript to go on submission in 2017.
When I was writing, hearing tips and advice from other authors who'd successfully achieved their dreams was my greatest resource. Now that I've discovered all the tips and tricks that took me from this photo to a debut novel, I'm eager to share what I've learned so that anyone who's always dreamed of finishing a book and sharing their story with the world knows how.
